For whatever reason - maybe Celebi sneezed, or was having a bad day - Ethan finds himself transported three years into the past. In Kanto.

He ends up meeting with the three-years-younger Red, who is now his age. Since the Red HE knows is an intimidating, silent figure who lives as a recluse, Ethan's expecting young!Red to be more or less the same. Some freaky quiet kid that tears people apart at pokémon battling.

Only, Red isn't. He's a cheerful, energetic kid who never shuts up and talks Ethan's ear off and wants to be ~best friends forever~ with everyone.

And Ethan's wondering, what the hell happened to turn this kid into brick wall?

And then he finds out. Firsthand.
